Overview
Born in Brighton, UK, Shadric Toop lived in Germany, Edinburgh, and London before returning to Brighton to establish his graphic design studio in 2000. Now focused primarily on illustration, he works across collage, drawing, painting, and digital media, blending traditional and contemporary techniques.
Training
Shadric studied architecture at degree level before realising his true passion lay in image-making. His illustration career evolved alongside his graphic design work, initially to meet the need for original visuals. Over time, he incorporated techniques from his personal artistic experiments into commercial projects, shaping his distinctive style.
Approach
Shadric’s approach blends his experience as both designer and artist. On commercial projects, he listens closely, researches thoroughly, and considers audience and context to craft compelling visual narratives. In artistic and publishing work, he embraces experimentation, challenging expectations to create distinctive and meaningful compositions.
Influences
Shadric’s work draws on a wide range of influences, from David Hockney and Peter Blake to René Gruau and Sandra Cinto. His passion for illustration began early, sparked by the iconic children’s illustrators of the 1960s and ’70s.
